Brunswick Hospital Center Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Brunswick Hospital Center (“BHC”) regarding its recent data breach. The BHC data breach involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

ABOUT BRUNSWICK HOSPITAL CENTER:

BHC is a 146-bed private, acute-care psychiatric hospital based in New York. Today, BHC offers programs that focus on the treatment of acute mental illness with a variety of treatment modalities.3 Accordingly, BHC treats age-specific psychiatric conditions ranging from schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, generalized anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.3 Additionally, BHC’s geriatric unit focuses on psychiatric issues in the elderly and dementia.3 Headquartered in Amityville, New York, BHC operates out of one location.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, BHC announced that the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on September 3, 2024, BHC was alerted to suspicious activity on certain systems on its computer network.1 As a result, BHC launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, BHC confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed and copied by an unauthorized third party between July 17, 2024, and August 6, 2024. As a result, BHC began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted, as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Government issued identification number
  • Financial account information
  • Payment card information
  • Medical information (e.g., dates of service, patient identification number, treatment information, medication information, procedure codes, procedure costs, procedure and provider information, diagnosis)
  • Health insurance information (e.g., claim information, information related to the payment of healthcare services)

 

On May 2, 2025, BHC posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on May 1, 2025, BHC began sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, BHC is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
