Skyward Specialty Insurance Data Breach Investigation

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Skyward Specialty reported to the Attorney General of Idaho that the sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, Skyward Specialty was recently alerted that a database where it stored certain documents was publicly discoverable to people who were in a position to identify the URL for that database.1 As a result, Skyward Specialty launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

 On April 5, 2025, Skyward Specialty was alerted that certain documents that were publicly discoverable were accessible on the dark web.1 As a result, Skyward Specialty began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by Skyward Specialty. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license or state identification number
  • Account number, or credit or debit card number, in combination with any required security code, access code, or password that would permit access to a resident’s financial account

 

On April 8, 2025, Skyward Specialty began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Idaho residents, Skyward Specialty is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
