Des Moines Orthopaedic Surgeons Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Des Moines Orthopaedic Surgeons, P.C. (“DMOS”) regarding its recent data breach. The DMOS data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

DMOS is a multi-faceted orthopaedic specialty center based in Iowa. Founded in 1955, DMOS provides comprehensive orthopaedic care for all types of conditions, including foot and ankle, hand and upper extremity, hip and knee, spine, neck, and shoulder injuries. Additionally, DMOS provides services in interventional therapy, medical imaging, physical therapy, urgent care, and access to durable medical equipment. Headquartered in West Des Moines, Iowa, DMOS has two additional locations in Iowa and employs over 200 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, DMOS discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, DMOS determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information due to a DMOS vendor failure on or about February 17, 2023. On January 22, 2024, DMOS began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license and/or state ID numbers
  • Passport information
  • Direct deposit bank information
  • Medical information 
  • Health insurance information
