Today, OrthoNY is focused on assessing, managing, and helping patients recover from orthopedic issues, sports injuries, and work-related injuries.3 This includes sports medicine, physical therapy and rehabilitation, diagnostic imaging, pain management, and total joint replacement. Additionally, OrthoNY provides a wide variety of treatments for the neck, back, shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, leg, knee, foot, and more. Headquartered in Albany, New York, OrthoNY has eight offices and three ambulatory surgery centers throughout the region and employs over 200 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, OrthoNY announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on or around December 28, 2023, OrthoNY became aware that it had experienced a ransomware attack.1 As a result, OrthoNY launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, OrthoNY confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third-party during the incident. As a result, OrthoNY began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license number
- Passport number
- Financial account information
- Health information
- Health insurance information
On November 4, 2024, OrthoNY posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on April 19, 2024, OrthoNY began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, OrthoNY is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
