Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Student Transportation of America (“STA”) regarding its recent data breach. The STA data breach involved sensitive personal information belonging to over 5,000 individuals.
ABOUT STUDENT TRANSPORTATION OF AMERICA:
STA is a student transportation company based in New Jersey. Founded in 1997, STA operates more than 22,000 vehicles throughout the U.S. and Canada, delivering safe and reliable transportation and fleet services to public and private schools in over 300 school districts.3 Additionally, STA provides a variety of services, including contracted services, charter services, used bus sales, managed transportation, special needs transportation, and managed services. Headquartered in Wall Township, New Jersey, STA employs over 10,000 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, STA reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on January 24, 2024, STA was alerted to suspicious activity in an employee’s email account. As a result, STA launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, STA learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised using the email accounts of certain STA employees. As a result, STA began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On July 15, 2024, STA completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
On August 8, 2024, STA mailed data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, STA is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
