South Western Communications Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating South Western Communications, Inc. (“SWC”) regarding its recent data breach. The SWC data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 1,100 individuals.

SWC is a communications, physical security, and life safety solutions company based in Indiana.3 Founded in 1976, SWC provides integrated, innovative communications, life safety and security solutions for healthcare, education, commercial, government, and detention clients across the U.S.4 Utilizing standard equipment and software, SWC combines individual technologies into an integrated control system to meet industry specific needs.5 Headquartered in Newburgh, Indiana, SWC has eight additional locations across seven states and employs over 300 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, SWC reported to the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, SWC detected suspicious activity within its network on December 22, 2023. As a result, SWC launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, SWC learned that sensitive personal information may have been viewed or taken from its systems between December 21 and December 22, 2023. As a result, SWC began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On July 10, 2024, SWC completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license or state identification number
  • Passport number
  • Financial account information
  • Payment card information
  • Username and password
  • Health insurance information

 

On July 26, 2024, SWC began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Massachusetts residents and posted on its website, SWC is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
