North Atlantic States Carpenters Health Benefits Fund Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating North Atlantic States Carpenters Health Benefits Fund (“NASCBF”) regarding its recent data breach. The NASCBF data breach involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

ABOUT NORTH ATLANTIC STATES CARPENTERS HEALTH BENEFITS FUND:

NASCBF is a union benefit fund based in Massachusetts. Today, NASCBF provided retirement, health, welfare, and other benefits to active and retired participants and families of the North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters (“NASRCC”), with benefits ranging from pensions to annuity, medical, dental, vision, accident and sickness coverage, vacation, and more.2,3,4 Work performed by members and contractors of the NASRCC includes wood framing, concrete, flooring, doors and hardware, mill work, etc.5 Headquartered in Wilmington, Massachusetts, NASCBF employs over 50 individuals and serves more than 45,000 active or retired members across approximately 22 union organizations represented by the NASRCC in Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine.3,6

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, NASCBF announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice shared on its website, on or about August 18, 2025, NASCBF observed suspicious activity within the network of the Hamden, Connecticut office.1 As a result, NASCBF launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, NASCBF confirmed that sensitive personal information and protected health information in the systems of the Connecticut office may have been accessed and/or acquired by an unauthorized third party during the breach. As a result, NASCBF began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Financial account or payment card information with access code
  • Login credentials
  • Tax information
  • Military identification number
  • Medical treatment, history, or diagnosis information
  • Health insurance information
  • Biometric information
  • Driver’s license or state issued identification number
  • Passport number
  • License plate number

 

As a result of the breach, NASCBF posted notice of the breach on its website. Additionally, on October 17, 2025, NASCBF filed official notice of the data breach with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights.7 Based on the website breach notice, NASCBF will be providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
