Awakenings is a counseling and sex therapy company based in North Carolina. Founded in 2000, Awakenings provides a range of counseling and therapy services to couples, individuals, and families, including couples counseling, sex therapy, anxiety treatment, depression therapy, premarital counseling, family and teen counseling, child therapy, and more.2 Headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, Awakenings employs approximately 32 individuals and operates an additional office in Greensboro, North Carolina.2,3,4
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Awakenings discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. On September 10, 2025, Awakenings became aware that an unauthorized party accessed its electronic records system, potentially including private healthcare information.5 In response to this incident, on November 7, 2025, Awakenings filed official notice of the data breach with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights.1 Though much information is still not known about the Awakenings breach, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ reporting guidelines require entities to report data breaches when they involve protected health information. Therefore, it is likely that the Awakenings breach included the protected health information belonging to over 17,500 individuals. Additionally, Awakenings posted notice of the data breach on its website.5 As a result of the data breach, Awakenings may soon begin notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted.
