WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Marquis reported to the Attorney General of South Carolina that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on August 14, 2025, Marquis identified suspicious activity on its network and later determined that it was the result of a cybersecurity incident.1 As a result, Marquis launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Marquis confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired by an unauthorized third party during the breach. As a result, Marquis began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. As of December 2, 2025, the type of information impacted in the breach has not been made publicly available by Marquis. However, according to South Carolina state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license number or state identification card number issued instead of a driver’s license
- Financial account number, or credit card or debit card number in combination with any required security code, access code, or password
- Other numbers or information which may be used to access a person’s financial accounts or numbers or information issued by a governmental or regulatory entity that uniquely will identify an individual
As a result of the breach, Marquis began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to South Carolina residents, Marquis is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
