HCIactive Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Healthcare Interactive, Inc., which does business as HCIactive (“HCIactive”), regarding its recent data breach. The HCIactive data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

HCIactive is a software development company based in Maryland. Founded in 2006, HCIactive specializes in providing the health administration and life, accident, and health insurance industries with software solutions for administrative needs, including AI tools, cloud-based platforms, and more.2,3,4 Headquartered in Ellicott City, Maryland, HCIactive employs over 50 individuals.3

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, HCIactive announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice shared on its website, on or around July 22, 2025, HCIactive became aware of suspicious activity related to its computer network.1 As a result, HCIactive launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, HCIactive confirmed that the sensitive personal information and protected health information in its network may have been accessed and acquired by an unauthorized third party between July 8 and July 12, 2025.1 As a result, HCIactive began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Contact information (phone number, email address)
  • Health insurance information (health plans/policies, insurance companies, member/group ID numbers, claims numbers, account numbers, explanation of benefits, billing codes)
  • Medical information (medical record numbers, doctors, diagnoses, prescriptions, lab results, images, care, treatment)

 

As a result of the breach, HCIactive posted notice of the data breach on its website. Based on the website breach notice, HCIactive is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.1 A link to the website breach notice is below.
