WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Sturgis Hospital announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice shared on its website, in December 2024, Sturgis Hospital detected unauthorized activity in its computer network.1 As a result, Sturgis Hospital launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident. During the investigation, Sturgis Hospital detected further unauthorized activity in its network in June 2025, prompting the launch of a separate investigation.
Through its investigations, Sturgis Hospital confirmed that the sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to patients and employees in its systems may have been accessed or acquired by an unauthorized third party during the breaches.1 As a result, Sturgis Hospital began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Contact information
- Financial account information (bank account number)
- Medical information (prescriptions, treatment records)
- Health insurance information
On September 18, 2025, Sturgis Hospital posted notice of the data breach to its website.
