Founded in 1947 as St. John’s Medical Center, HRMC was purchased in 1978 by what is now its namesake non-profit community corporation.2 In addition to its main 25-bed critical access hospital, HRMC today is comprised of clinics it has since acquired or opened, including the HRMC Physicians Clinic, the Women’s Wellness Center, and HRMC ProRehab.2 Headquartered in Huron, South Dakota, HRMC employs over 200 individuals.3
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, HRMC reported to the Attorney General of Montana that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on or around May 31, 2025, HRMC became aware of suspicious activity in its network environment.1 As a result, HRMC launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, HRMC confirmed that the sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed and copied by an unauthorized third party during the breach.1 As a result, HRMC began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On August 21, 2025, HRMC completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Phone number and address
- Date of birth
- Medical information (dates of service, cost of service, lab results, medical diagnostic images, prescriptions, medical diagnosis and treatment)
- Medicare or Medicaid number
- Health insurance information
- Financial account information
On September 9, 2025, HRMC began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice being sent to Montana residents, HRMC is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services. 1 A link to breach notification letters that HRMC filed with the Attorney General of Montana is below.
