MVL is a biomedical testing laboratory based in Washington. Founded in 1976, MVL specializes in urine, hormone and food sensitivity testing.2 Headquartered in Tukwila, WA, MVL employs over 10 individuals and is a CLIA Certified lab that participates in proficiency testing through both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB).3
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, MVL posted notice to its website that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on July 3, 2025, MVL discovered suspicious activity on systems in its network.1 As a result, MVL launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its ongoing investigation, MVL has confirmed that sensitive personal information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired by an unauthorized third party between May 30 and July 3, 2025. As a result, MVL began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected.
On August 29, 2025, MVL filed official notice of the data breach with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights.4 Though much information is still not known about the information acquired in the MVL breach, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ reporting guidelines require entities to report data breaches when they involve protected health information. Therefore, it is likely that the MVL breach included the protected health information belonging to an unknown number of individuals. As a result of the data breach, MVL may soon begin notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted.
