Founded in 1898, NJCPA is one of the largest professional groups in New Jersey and provides certified public accountants (CPAs) with opportunities for continuing education, networking, personal and professional development, and savings.3 Headquartered in Roseland, New Jersey, NJCPA employs over 10 individuals and includes over 14,000 members.3
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, NJCPA reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on February 17, 2025, NJCPA became aware of unusual activity when an unauthorized party attempted to access its network without authorization.1 As a result, NJCPA launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, NJCPA confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party during the breach. 1 As a result, NJCPA began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On August 12, 2025, NJCPA finalized the list of individuals to notify. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes: 4
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s License number
- Financial account numbers (credit/debit card numbers)
On September 3, 2025, NJCPA began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, NJCPA is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services. 1 A link to the form breach notification letters that NJCPA filed with the Attorney General of Maine is below.
