WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Keys Pathology reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on May 27, 2025, Keys Pathology’s third-party vendor, Genesis, informed Keys Pathology that an unknown actor accessed its server without authorization.1 As a result, Genesis launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Genesis confirmed that sensitive personal information belonging to Keys Pathology patients in its systems may have been viewed and downloaded by an unauthorized third party on or around May 20, 2025. As a result, Genesis began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
- Date of birth
- Phone number
- Driver’s license number
- Health information
On September 5, 2025, Keys Pathology began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Keys Pathology is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
