WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Family Counseling announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on or about February 4, 2024, Family Counseling discovered that a number of employee email accounts were accessed by an unauthorized party.1 As a result, Family Counseling launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Family Counseling confirmed that sensitive personal information and protected health information in its emails may have been accessed and/or acquired by an unauthorized third party between January 14 and February 4, 2025. As a result, Family Counseling began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license number
- Bank account number
- Health insurance information
- Medical information
As a result of the breach, on August 25, 2025, Family Counseling posted notice to their website and began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice posted to their website, Family Counseling is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.1 A link to the website breach notice is below.
