In business for 85 years, LAC is focused on advancing Phase 1 of Thacker Pass toward production, targeting an output of 40,000 tonnes (or 8.8 million pounds) per year of battery-quality lithium carbonate.3 Headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, LAC has additional locations in Reno and Winnemucca, Nevada and employs over 500 individuals.2,3

WHAT HAPPENED?

On July 24, 2025, LAC reported to the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on April 11, 2025, LAC discovered that an unauthorized third party had accessed its network and released software which impacted the accessibility of some of its systems.1 Therefore, LAC launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, LAC determined that the unauthorized third party accessed its network and obtained certain data between April 7 and April 11, 2025.1 As a result, LAC began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • Passport number
  • Sex
  • Financial account information (e.g. salary/wage information)
  • Health records (e.g. benefits summary)
  • Employment information (e.g. phone number, investigation/discipline, perf. Review, and background check results)

As a result of the data breach, LAC began providing notice to impacted individuals. Based on the notice sent to Massachusetts residents, LAC is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.1 A link to the breach report filed by LAC to the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is below.
