Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Farmer’s Rice Cooperative (“FRC”) regarding its recent data breach. The FRC data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.
ABOUT FARMER'S RICE COOPERATIVE:
FRC is a grower-owned rice marketing cooperative based in California. Founded in 1944, FRC supplies domestic and international food manufacturers, brewers, private retailers, exporters and distributors with California rice.3 Today, FRC processes and markets approximately 25 percent of all of the rice grown in California, 50 percent of which is marketed domestically.3 Headquartered in Sacramento, California, FRC owns and operates three mills, two of which are located in West Sacramento, California and another located in Woodland, California.4
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, FRC reported to the Attorney General of California that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on or around August 31, 2024, FRC discovered that it had experienced a cyber security incident.1 As a result, FRC launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, FRC confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party between August 30 and September 2, 2024. As a result, FRC began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
- Date of birth
On July 1, 2025, FRC began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to California residents, FRC is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
