WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Optima Tax Relief reported to the Attorney General of California that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on May 1, 2025, Optima Tax Relief identified unusual activity in its network.1 As a result, Optima Tax Relief launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Optima Tax Relief determined that an unauthorized person accessed the network between May 1, 2025, and May 6, 2025, and downloaded copies of certain files.1 As a result, Optima Tax Relief began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Financial information (e.g., account number, credit or debit card number)
Recently, Optima Tax Relief began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals.
