WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Western Montana Clinic announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised.1 According to the breach notice posted on its website, on April 15, 2025, Western Montana Clinic observed unusual activity in certain employee email accounts.1 As a result, Western Montana Clinic launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Western Montana Clinic determined that there was occasional access to employee emails by an unauthorized individual between March 11 and April 15, 2025, during which time, the unauthorized actor attempted to change bank account information to redirect funds to the unauthorized individual’s account.1 As a result, Western Montana Clinic began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. According to the breach notice, the sensitive personal information potentially affected includes the following types of information:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Health records
Recently, Western Montana Clinic began providing notice to impacted individuals.
