Vail Summit Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Vail Summit Orthopaedics (“Vail Summit”), regarding its recent data breach. The Vail Summit data breach involved sensitive personally identifiable information and protected health information belonging to an unknown number of individuals.

ABOUT VAIL SUMMIT ORTHOPAEDICS:

Vail Summit is an orthopaedic group based in Colorado. Founded in 1979, Vail Summit physicians individualize treatment for each patient, taking their lifestyle, fitness goals, and the unique presentation of their injury into consideration.2 Headquartered in Frisco, Colorado, Vail Summit has additional locations in Vail, Edwards, Silverthorne, Frisco, Breckenridge, and Grand Junction, Colorado, and employs over 50 individuals.3

WHAT HAPPENED?

On August 1, 2025, Vail Summit reported to the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on August 6, 2024, Vail Summit learned of suspicious activity in its email environment.As a result, Vail Summit launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Vail Summit determined that an unauthorized third party accessed and acquired certain files during this incident.As a result, Vail Summit began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On July 24, 2025, Vail Summit completed its investigation. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Health insurance information
  • Health records
  • Medical information (e.g., medical diagnosis/treatment/procedure information, medical history, prescription drugs taken, test results and imaging, treatment dates, treatment locations)

 

On August 1, 2025, Vail Summit began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Massachusetts residents, Vail Summit is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
