WHAT HAPPENED?
On July 28, 2025, Begin reported to the Attorney General of New Hampshire that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, Begin recently detected unauthorized access to its tax software used to file client tax returns. 1 As a result, Begin launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Begin revealed that certain client information may have been exposed to an unauthorized actor who gained entry into Begin’s tax software that is used to prepare and electronically file tax returns.1 As a result, Begin began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On July 16, 2025, Begin completed its investigation. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
On August 1, 2025, Begin began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to New Hampshire residents, Begin is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
