Next Step Healthcare Data Breach Investigation

ABOUT NEXT STEP HEALTHCARE, LLC:

Next Step Healthcare is a healthcare system based in Massachusetts. Founded in 2005, Next Step Healthcare provides nursing and rehab facilities in Massachusetts for families and individuals who need short- or long-term options in the face of a variety of health conditions.2 Today, Next Step Healthcare operates out of 16 locations across Massachusetts.3 Headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts, Next Step Healthcare employs over 1,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Next Step Healthcare reported to the Attorney General of New Hampshire that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on or around June 5, 2024, Next Step Healthcare was alerted to unusual activity within its network.1 As a result, Next Step Healthcare launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Next Step Healthcare discovered that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed and downloaded by an unauthorized third party during the breach. As a result, Next Step Healthcare began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On May 22, 2025, Next Step Healthcare completed this review. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by Next Step Healthcare. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license or other government identification number
  • Account number, credit or debit card number, in combination with any required security code, access code, or password that would permit access to an individual’s financial account

 

On May 29, 2025, Next Step Healthcare began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to New Hampshire residents, Next Step Healthcare is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
