Stewart Property Management Data Breach Investigation

Stewart Property Management is a full-service management company based in New Hampshire. Started in the 1980s, Stewart Property Management manages affordable housing in New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts.3 Currently, Stewart Property Management manages over 110 properties located in those states.3 Headquartered in Bedford, New Hampshire, Stewart Property Management operates out of one location.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Stewart Property Management reported to the Attorney General of Maine that the sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, Stewart Property Management recently identified suspicious activity related to an employee email account.1 As a result, Stewart Property Management launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Stewart Property Management confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party between December 3 and December 13, 2024. As a result, Stewart Property Management began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted, as well as identify the specific individuals affected. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by Stewart Property Management. However, according to Maine state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license or state identification card number
  • Account number, credit card number or debit card number, if circumstances exist wherein such a number could be used without additional identifying information, access codes or passwords
  • Account passwords or personal identification numbers or other access codes

 

On May 06, 2025, Stewart Property Management began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Stewart Property Management is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
