Drug and Alcohol Treatment Services Data Breach Investigation

DATS is a private, non-profit outpatient drug and alcohol treatment center based in Pennsylvania. Founded in 1977, DATS provides professional counseling for substance abuse and addiction along the traditional lines.3 Today, some of the specific programs offered by DATS includes the intensive outpatient program, traditional outpatient programs, adolescent programming, and case management services.3 Headquartered in Scranton, Pennsylvania, DATS employs over 10 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, DATS announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, DATS recently discovered that it had experienced a network security incident.1 As a result, DATS launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, DATS confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party on or around October 6, 2024. As a result, DATS began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Health insurance information
  • Patient account numbers
  • Medication information
  • Diagnosis and treatment information
  • Doctor names
  • Medical claims and billing information

 

As a result of the data breach, DATS posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, DATS has begun providing notice to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, DATS is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted.
