Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Albion College (“Albion”) regarding its recent data breach. The Albion data breach involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to over 6,900 individuals.
ABOUT ALBION COLLEGE:
Albion is an undergraduate, liberal arts college located in Albion, Michigan. Founded in 1835, Albion offers nearly 90 areas of study in the humanities, social sciences, fine and performing arts, business and economics, and law and policy.3 Competing in Division III of the NCAA as the Brits, Albion has 24 intercollegiate varsity teams and enrolls over 1,300 students annually.4,5
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Albion reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, Albion recently discovered that it had experienced a data security incident.1 As a result, Albion launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Albion confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party on December 17, 2024. As a result, Albion began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Government issued ID number (e.g., passport, state ID number)
- Financial information (e.g., account number, credit or debit card number)
- Medical information
On May 1, 2025, Albion began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Albion is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
