MedEx Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Medical Express Ambulance Inc., which does business as MedEx Ambulance (“MedEx”), regarding its recent data breach. The MedEx data breach involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to over 118,000 individuals.

ABOUT MEDICAL EXPRESS AMBULANCE INC. D/B/A MEDEX AMBULANCE:

MedEx is an ambulance service provider based in Illinois. Founded in 1998, MedEx offers a variety of services, including both basic life support and advanced life support ambulance transportation, critical care services, critical care services with RN, Medicar and service car transports.3 Today, MedEx has over 80 ambulances in its fleet.4 Headquartered in Skokie, Illinois, MedEx employs over 200 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, MedEx reported to the Attorney General of Maine that the sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on March 18, 2024, MedEx experienced a network disruption that impacted the functionality and access of certain systems.1 As a result, MedEx launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, MedEx confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party during the breach. As a result, MedEx began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On March 19, 2025, MedEx completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Demographic information
  • Driver’s license number
  • Passport information
  • Financial information
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information
  • Username and password

 

On April 14, 2025, MedEx began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, MedEx is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
