Food for the Poor Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Food for the Poor, Inc. (“FFTP”) regarding its recent data breach. The FFTP data breach involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to over 52,000 individuals.

ABOUT FOOD FOR THE POOR, INC.:

FFTP is a non-profit international relief and development organization based in Florida. Founded in 1982, FFTP’s mission is to provide food and assistance to hungry children and families living in poverty throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.3 Additionally, FFTP provides emergency relief assistance, water, medicine, educational materials, homes, support for vulnerable children, care for the aged, skills training and micro-enterprise development assistance.3 Headquartered in Coconut Creek, Florida, FFTP employs over 200 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, FFTP announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on around September 6, 2024, FFTP identified unusual activity on its network.1 As a result, FFTP launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, FFTP confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party between September 2 and September 6, 2024. As a result, FFTP began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number or state ID number
  • Passport number
  • Tax ID number
  • Financial account number/information
  • Payment card number/information
  • Health information
  • Health insurance information

 

On April 4, 2025, FFTP posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on the same day, FFTP began sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, FFTP is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
