Founded in 1979, UDW represents more than 170,000 home care and family childcare providers in 45 counties in California.2 Today, UDW focuses on issues surrounding working conditions and fair pay for home care and childcare providers, and funding for programs like In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) and subsidized family childcare.2 Headquartered in San Diego, California, UDW employs over 50 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, UDW reported to the Attorney General of California that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on January 17, 2025, UDW detected an incident in which an unauthorized third party attempted to gain access to its servers.1 As a result, UDW launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, UDW confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party during the breach. As a result, UDW began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
On March 27, 2025, UDW began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to California residents, UDW is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
