Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Converse University (“Converse”) regarding its recent data breach. The Converse data breach involved sensitive personal information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.
ABOUT CONVERSE UNIVERSITY:
Converse is a private university in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Founded in 1889 as a women’s college, Converse became co-ed in Fall 2020.2 Today, Converse has over 50 undergraduate degrees and 30 doctorate programs.3 Competing as the Valkyries, Converse has women’s, men’s, and co-ed sports for its almost 2,000 students.4
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Converse reported to the Attorney General of South Carolina that the sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on November 11, 2024, Converse identified unusual activity on a portion of its network.1 As a result, Converse launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Converse confirmed that sensitive personal information belonging to students alumni, and employees may have been viewed and copied from its systems during the breach. As a result, Converse began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by Converse. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license or state identification card
- Financial account number, or credit or debit card number, in combination with any required security code, access code, or password that would permit access to an individual’s financial account
Around March 19, 2025, Converse began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notices provided to South Carolina residents, Converse is providing affected individuals with a list of the information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
