California Cryobank Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating California Cryobank, LLC and its affiliates (collectively, “California Cryobank”) regarding its recent data breach. The California Cryobank data breach involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA CRYOBANK, LLC:

California Cryobank is a sperm bank and fertility service provider based in California. Founded in 1977, California Cryobank provides a variety of reproductive services ranging from pre-to-post conception, including donor semen, family planning, private storage options, vial buyback and exchange, cord blood banking, sibling registry, and more.4 Headquartered in Los Angeles, California, California Cryobank has laboratory and branch office locations in California, New York, Massachusetts, and Maryland, and employs over 200 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, California Cryobank reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on April 21, 2024, California Cryobank discovered suspicious activity on certain computers in its information technology environment.1 As a result, California Cryobank launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, California Cryobank confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained between April 20 and April 22, 2024. As a result, California Cryobank began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Financial account number
  • Health insurance information

 

On March 14, 2025, California Cryobank provided initial notice to impacted individuals via email. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, California Cryobank is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
