St. Clair Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating St. Clair Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine (“St. Clair”) regarding its recent data breach. The St. Clair data breach may have involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to approximately 340,000 individuals.

ABOUT ST. CLAIR ORTHOPAEDICS & SPORTS MEDICINE:

St. Clair is a healthcare practice based in Michigan. Today, St. Clair specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopy, foot and ancle, hand, wrist and elbow, joint reconstruction, hip and knee replacement, shoulder injuries and reconstruction, spine, neck and back, trauma (fracture care), regenerative medicine, physical medicine and rehab, and pediatric medicine.3 Additionally, St. Clair offers a range of medical services such as diagnostic imaging, joint injections, bracing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, IME’s, works compensation, surgery, and immediate care.4 Headquartered in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, St. Clair has an additional location in Macomb, Michigan and employs over 20 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, St. Clair announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on November 24, 2024, St. Clair discovered suspicious activity within its network.1 As a result, St. Clair launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, St. Clair confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party during the breach to its network. As a result, St. Clair began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On January 29, 2024, St. Clair completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Phone number and email address
  • Driver’s license or state ID number, or other ID number
  • Health insurance data (e.g., health plans/policies, insurance companies, member/group ID numbers, and Medicaid-Medicare government payor ID numbers)
  • Health insurance data (e.g., health plans/policies, insurance companies, member/group ID numbers, and Medicaid-Medicare government payor ID numbers)
  • Health insurance data (e.g., health plans/policies, insurance companies, member/group ID numbers, and Medicaid-Medicare government payor ID numbers)

 

As a result of the data breach, St. Clair posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, St. Clair plans to directly notify impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, St. Clair is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted.
