Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Moore, Ellison & McDuffie, CPAs, PA (“MEMCPA”) regarding its recent data breach. The MEMCPA data breach may have involved sensitive personal information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

MEMCPA is a certified public accounting firm based in Florida. Originally established in 1972 as a sole proprietorship by Larry W. Lehman, CPA, MEMCPA later became Professional Association providing a range of accounting services to businesses and individuals.2 Today, MEMCPA’s services include income tax preparation, IRS and state audit representation, payroll reporting, QuickBooks setup, support and training, business startup services, monthly bookkeeping, and financial statements.2 Headquartered in Tallahassee, Florida, MEMCPA employs over 15 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, MEMCPA reported to the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on October 30, 2024, MEMCPA identified unusual activity associated with an email account in its environment.1 As a result, MEMCPA launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, MEMCPA confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party through an email account between October 25 and October 30, 2024. As a result, MEMCPA began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number

 

On February 21, 2025, MEMCPA began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Massachusetts residents, MEMCPA is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
