Precision Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Precision Orthopedics & Sports Medicine (“Precision”) regarding its recent data breach. The Precision data breach may have involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to over 1,900 individuals.

ABOUT PRECISION ORTHOPEDICS & SPORTS MEDICINE:

Precision is a private practice group of orthopedic surgeons based in Maryland. Founded in 2012, Precision specializes in sports medicine, joint replacement, nerve injuries and microscopy, knee, elbow, and wrist arthroscopy, work-related injuries, and more.3 Today, Precision has ten locations across Maryland and Washington D.C.3 Headquartered in Laurel, Maryland, Precision employs over 50 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Precision announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on September 12, 2024, Precision learned of unusual activity in our email system.1 As a result, Precision launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Precision confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party through employee email accounts due to a phishing email between September 10 and September 12, 2024. As a result, Precision began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Services received
  • Date of service
  • Treating provider
  • Medication information
  • Treatment and/or diagnostic information

 

As a result of the data breach, Precision posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on February 13, 2025, Precision began sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Precision is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted.
