PayrollOrg Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating American Payroll Institute Inc., which does business as PayrollOrg, regarding its recent data breach. The PayrollOrg data breach may have involved sensitive personal information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

ABOUT AMERICAN PAYROLL INSTITUTE, INC. D/B/A PAYROLLORG:

PayrollOrg is a payroll education company based in Texas. Founded in 1982, PayrollOrg specializes in payroll education, publications, certification and training.2 Today, PayrollOrg offers payroll conferences and seminars, a complete library of resource texts, and industry-recognized certifications.2 Each year, PayrollOrg enrolls more than 100,000 participants from more than 100 countries in its training programs.3 Headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, PayrollOrg employs over 50 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, PayrollOrg reported to the Attorney General of New Hampshire that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on October 8, 2024, PayrollOrg became aware of suspicious activity on its systems.1 As a result, PayrollOrg launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, PayrollOrg confirmed that sensitive personal information belonging to employees and contractors in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party between September 18, 2024, and October 8, 2024. As a result, PayrollOrg began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On December 10, 2024, PayrollOrg completed this review. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by PayrollOrg. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:

  • Name
  • Social security number
  • Driver’s license or other government identification number
  • Account number, credit or debit card number, in combination with any required security code, access code, or password that would permit access to an individual’s financial account

 

On December 30, 2024, PayrollOrg began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to New Hampshire residents, PayrollOrg is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
