St. James Place of Baton Rouge Data Breach Investigation

St. James Place is a continuing care retirement community based in Louisiana. Founded in 1983, St. James Place features a gated 52-acre campus for those 62 years and older who want to live independently while also having access healthcare and support services, if they are needed.2 Today, the healthcare services offered by St. James Place include an onsite wellness clinic, independent living, assisted living, memory care, and well as short and long term nursing care.3 Headquartered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, St. James Place employs over 200 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, St. James Place reported to the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on August 2, 2024, St. James Place became aware of technical issues related to systems in its network.1 As a result, St. James Place launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, St. James Place confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party between July 30, 2024, and August 2, 2024. As a result, St. James Place began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On October 25, 2024, St. James Place completed its preliminary review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number

 

On December 11, 2024, St. James Place began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notices provided to the Massachusetts residents, St. James Place is providing affected individuals with a list of the information impacted and 24 months of complimentary identity monitoring services.
