PIH Health is a nonprofit, regional healthcare network that serves approximately 3 million residents in the Los Angeles County, Orange County and San Gabriel Valley region in California.2 Today, PIH Health is comprised of PIH Health Downey Hospital, PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital, PIH Health Whittier Hospital, 37 outpatient medical office buildings, a multispecialty medical (physician) group, home healthcare services and hospice care, as well as heart, cancer, digestive health, orthopedics, women’s health, urgent care and emergency services.2 Headquartered in Whittier, California, PIH Health employs over 5,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, PIH Health announced that it had experienced a cybersecurity incident. According to the breach notice posted on its website, on December 1, 2024, PIH Health experienced a ransomware attack in which a criminal act compromised its network.1 During the security breach, PIH Health Downey Hospital, PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital, and PIH Health Whittier Hospital, Urgent Care Centers, doctor’s offices and its home health and hospice agency were all impacted.1 Additionally, patient health records, laboratory systems, pharmacy, radiology, patient registration, and all other information technology systems and tools are down, including internet access.1 As of December 9, 2024, PIH Health’s systems have still not been restored and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
