Cornerstone Bank Data Breach Investigation

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Cornerstone Bank announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on July 10, 2024, Cornerstone Bank discovered suspicious activity related to a small number of employee email accounts.1 As a result, Cornerstone Bank launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Cornerstone Bank confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third-party using certain employee email accounts. As a result, Cornerstone Bank began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On September 24, 2024, Cornerstone Bank completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license or state identification number
  • Taxpayer identification number
  • Financial information (e.g., account number, routing number, payment card number in combination with PIN and/or expiration date)

 

On November 1, 2024, Cornerstone Bank posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on November 4, 2024, Cornerstone Bank mailed data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Cornerstone Bank is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
