Summit Pathology Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Summit Pathology and Summit Pathology Laboratories, Inc. (collectively, “Summit”) regarding its recent data breach. The Summit data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

Summit is an independent pathology laboratory, owned by a practice of twenty-two board certified pathologists based in Colorado.3 Founded in 2004, Summit serves various hospital systems and physician offices across Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska, offering a wide range of pathology services.3 Today, along with general surgical pathology, Summit has expertise in breast pathology, cytopathology, hematopathology (including flow cytometry), gastrointestinal pathology, dermatopathology, transfusion medicine, microbiology and clinical chemistry.3 Headquartered in Loveland, Colorado, Summit employs over 50 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Summit reported to the Attorney General of California that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on or around April 18, 2024, Summit became aware of suspicious activity within its computer environment. As a result, Summit launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Summit discovered that sensitive personal information in its systems was viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party. As a result, Summit began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Adress
  • Date of birth
  • Financial information
  • Medical information such as diagnoses
  • Medical billing and insurance information

 

On October 18, 2024, Summit began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to California residents, Summit is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
