WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Industrial Scientific reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, in October and November 2023, Industrial Scientific detected unusual activity within its network environment stemming from cybersecurity incidents involving two separate unauthorized third parties.1 Upon becoming aware of the issue, Industrial Scientific launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Industrial Scientific learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized individual between January 25, 2023, and November 6, 2023. As a result, Industrial Scientific began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On September 3, 2024, Industrial Scientific concluded this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license or state issued identification number
  • Passport number
  • Birth certificate number
  • Financial information (e.g., account number, credit or debit card number)
  • Health insurance information

On October 3, 2024, Industrial Scientific began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals.
