MEMC is a semiconductor manufacturer based in Missouri. Founded in 1959, MEMC designs and manufactures specialty silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers that support smartphones, gaming systems, cars, and more.4 Additionally, MEMC is the only SOI wafer manufacturer in the United States.4 Today, MEMC is a subsidiary of GlobalWafers, a global semiconductor technology company. Headquartered in St. Peters, Missouri, MEMC employs over 200 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, MEMC announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, MEMC recently became aware of unauthorized access to its computer network. As a result, MEMC launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, MEMC learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised and removed by an unauthorized third-party on or about June 12, 2024. As a result, MEMC began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On September 18, 2024, MEMC completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license or government ID number
- Passport number
As a result of the data breach, MEMC posted notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on September 27, 2024, MEMC began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, MEMC is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary identity monitoring services.
