WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Amgen reported to the Attorney General of California that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, Amgen recently learned that one of its third-party service providers, Sirva, Inc., had experienced a data security incident that impacted data belonging to Amgen. On or about September 29, 2023, Sirva became aware of suspicious activity within its network environment. As a result, Sirva launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Sirva learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and copied by unknown actors between August 16, 2023, and October 17, 2023. As a result, Sirva began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On August 8, 2024, Sirva informed Amgen that some of its information may have been impacted in the breach. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Contact information
  • Date of birth
  • Non-U.S. address
  • Gender identification
  • Financial account information
  • Credit/debit card information
  • Employment information, including salary
  • Passport information
  • Unique or other government issued ID number
  • Taxpayer identification number
  • Sirva file number
  • Loan information
  • Medical/health information

On September 25, 2024, Amgen began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals.
