Legacy Capital Advisors Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Legacy Capital Advisors, LLC (“Legacy”) regarding its recent data breach. The Legacy data breach may have involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to over 3,300 individuals.

ABOUT LEGACY CAPITAL ADVISORS, LLC:

Legacy is a financial service provider based in Georgia. Founded in 2013, Legacy offers a variety of financial products and services to individuals, including wealth management, risk management, value-added services, tax planning, legacy planning, and cash management. Today, Legacy uses its Ring Formula, a proprietary process that integrates wealth management with risk management, income, tax planning, and philanthropy for successful families, professionals, and business owners to continually adjust and monitor client’s critical life and financial events to keep financial plans on track.4 Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, Legacy has three additional offices across North Carolina and Nevada and employs over 20 individuals.3

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Legacy announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on September 25, 2023, Legacy identified suspicious activity within its email environment. As a result, Legacy launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Legacy learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third-party using company email accounts beginning in late July 2023. As a result, Legacy began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On March 20, 2024, Legacy completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • Passport number
  • Taxpayer identification number
  • Employer identification number
  • Electronic/digital signature
  • Username and password
  • Financial account information
  • Payment card information
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information

 

On August 27, 2024, Legacy posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on August 26, 2024, Legacy mailed data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice filed with the Attorney General of Maine, Legacy is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
