WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, it was reported by multiple online sources that Toyota had experienced a data breach impacting the privacy of its customers’ data. According to these sources, Toyota recently released a statement confirming the breach saying, “We are aware of the situation. The issue is limited in scope and is not a system wide issue.”1 Toyota added that its, “engaged with those who are impacted and will provide assistance if needed.”1 Additionally, a hacker group has taken responsibility for the incident saying they, “…breached a U.S. branch and were able to steal 240GB of files with information on Toyota employees and customers…”1 As of August 21, 2024, Toyota has not disclosed the specific nature of the cybersecurity incident or confirmed whether the incident resulted in a data breach.
