The Dental Specialists Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Dental Specialists of Minnesota, PLLC, which does business as The Dental Specialists, regarding its recent data breach. The Dental Specialists data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 38,000 individuals.

The Dental Specialists is a multi-specialty dental group consisting of over 20 specialty dentists based in Minnesota.2 Today, The Dental Specialists specializes in an array of dental practice areas, including endodontics, oral surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and prosthodontics. These practice areas cover dental services such as braces, dental implants, extractions, facial fractures, restorations and crowns, gum recession, missing teeth, oral biopsy, teeth cleanings, root canals, wisdom teeth removal, and more. Headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, The Dental Specialists has over 25 locations throughout the Twin Cities and employs over 50 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, The Dental Specialists announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on January 23, 2024, The Dental Specialists became aware of suspicious activity within its email environment. As a result, The Dental Specialists launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, The Dental Specialists learned that sensitive personal information in its Microsoft 635 cloud environment may have been compromised by an unauthorized actor using employee emails between January 11 and January 23, 2024. As a result, The Dental Specialists began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On June 10, 2024, The Dental Specialists completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:  

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • Demographic information
  • Financial account information
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information

 

As a result of the data breach, The Dental Specialists posted notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, The Dental Specialists mailed data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice on its website, The Dental Specialists will be providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted.
