NPS Media Group Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating National Publisher Services, LLC, which does business as NPS Media Group, regarding its recent data breach. The NPS Media Group data breach may have involved sensitive personal information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

NPS Media Group is a magazine circulation and newsstand outsourcing firm based in Connecticut. Founded in 1987, NPS Media Group’s core business is circulation management and audience development.2 Accordingly, NPS Media Group focuses on customer acquisition and retention, fulfillment management, business modeling, strategic planning, print and digital direct response marketing, single-copy sales at retail and list services.2 Today, NPS Media Group provides circulation management services to more than 50 publishers and over 150 titles.2 Headquartered in Shelton, Connecticut, NPS Media Group has two additional locations in New Jersey and Des Moines, and employs approximately 40 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, NPS Media Group reported to the Attorney General of New Hampshire that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on or about May 23, 2024, NPS Media Group detected suspicious activity within its computer network. As a result, NPS Media Group launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, NPS Media Group learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and taken by an unauthorized actor between April 11 and April 30, 2024. As a result, NPS Media Group began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On or about June 27, 2024, NPS Media Group completed this review. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by NPS Media Group. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:            

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license or other government identification number
  • Account number, credit or debit card number, in combination with any required security code, access code, or password that would permit access to an individual’s financial account

 

On July 31, 2024, NPS Media Group mailed data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to New Hampshire residents, NPS Media Group is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
