Cumberland Heights Data Breach Investigation

Cumberland Heights is a nonprofit alcohol and drug treatment center based in Tennessee. Founded in 1966, Cumberland Heights provides expert medical care, family support, and effective psychosocial therapies to those suffering from addiction.3 Additionally, Cumberland Heights’ comprehensive approach spans the entire continuum of care, from initial treatment to extended care services and relapse prevention.3 Headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, Cumberland Heights has 14 additional outpatient centers throughout Tennessee and employs over 200 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Cumberland Heights reported to the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on February 21, 2024, Cumberland Heights discovered unauthorized activity within its email environment. As a result, Cumberland Heights launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Cumberland Heights learned that sensitive personal information may have been compromised using an employee email user account. As a result, Cumberland Heights began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • Medical information (e.g., date of admission, attendance information, intensive outpatient consultation and admission information, medical record number, mental or physical conditions/treatment)

 

On August 5, 2024, Cumberland Heights began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Massachusetts residents, Cumberland Heights is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
