Gunster, Yoakley & Stewart Data Breach Investigation

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Gunster reported to the Attorney General of Iowa that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on November 27, 2022, Gunster discovered a data security incident in which an unauthorized third party accessed its computer network. As a result, Gunster launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Gunster learned that sensitive personal information may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party. As a result, Gunster began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Passport or other government identification number
  • Financial account number
  • Payment card number
  • Medical information (e.g., medical record number, diagnosis and treatment information)
  • Health insurance information (e.g., health insurance benefit information, claims data)

 

On April 6, 2023, Gunster began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Since then, Gunster has sent additional rounds of letters. Based on the breach notice sent to Iowa residents, Gunster is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
