Antioch University Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Coalition for the Common Good, which does business as Antioch University (“Antioch”), regarding its recent data breach. The Antioch data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to over 5,800 individuals.

Antioch is a private, liberal arts college with a main campus located in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Founded in 1852, Antioch offers over 175 degrees and certificates spanning the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels in a wide range of academic focus areas, including creative writing & communication, counseling & therapy, education, environmental studies & sustainability, individualized studies, leadership & management, nursing & health professions, psychology, and various undergraduate studies. Today, Antioch is composed of seven campuses: Antioch University New England, Antioch University Midwest, Antioch University Los Angeles, Antioch University Santa Barbara, Antioch University Seattle, Antioch University Online, and the University’s Graduate School of Leadership & Change.3

WHAT HAPPENED?

On August 11, 2023, Antioch discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Antioch determined that an unauthorized third party accessed this sensitive information via a ransomware attack on August 8, 2023. On July 10, 2024, Antioch began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by Antioch. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license or state ID number
  • Account number, credit or debit card number
  • Account passwords, personal identification numbers, or other access codes
