Vannguard Utility Partners Data Breach Investigation

Founded in 2000, Vannguard contracts with utilities to locate and mark their buried facilities prior to excavation.2 These utilities can be large investor-owned, rural cooperatives, or city run municipalities.2 Examples of buried facilities requiring marks prior to excavation include Gas, Electric, Telephone, Cable TV, Water, Sewer, and Fiber Optics.2 Vannguard’s primary focus is gas and electric utilities and represents 97% of its locating business.2 Today, Vannguard provides these services in a variety of states, including Colorado, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Arkansas. Headquartered in DeForest, Wisconsin, Vannguard employs over 500 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Vannguard discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, Vannguard determined that an unauthorized third party accessed this sensitive information on May 14, 2024. On June 20, 2024, Vannguard began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number
